The Craft of the Cocktail: Everything You Need to Know to Be a Master Bartender, with 500 Recipes
ByCocktails are bigger than ever, and this is the first real cookbook for them, covering the entire breadth of this rich subject. The Craft of the Cocktail provides much more than merely the same old recipes: it delves into history, personalities, and anecdotes; it shows you how to set up a bar, master important techniques, and use tools correctly; and it delivers unique concoctions, many featuring Dale DeGroff’s signature use of fresh juices, as well as all the classics.
Debonair, a great raconteur, and an unparalleled authority, Dale DeGroff is the epitome of Perfect Bartender, universally acknowledged as the world’s premier mixologist. From Entertainment Weekly and USA Today to the Culinary Institute of America and the nation’s best restaurants, whenever anybody wants information or training on the bar, they turn to Dale for recipes, for history, for anecdotes, for fun—for cocktail-party conversation as well as for cocktails.
That’s what The Craft of the Cocktail is—the full party, conversation and all. It begins with the history of spirits, how they’re made (but without too much boring science), the development of the mixed drink, and the culture it created, all drawn from Dale’s vast library of vintage cocktail books. Then on to stocking the essential bar, choosing the right tools and ingredients, mastering key techniques—hints worthy of a pro, the same information that Dale shares with the bartenders he trains in seminars and through his videos. And then the meat of the matter: 500 recipes, including everything from tried-and-true classics to of-the-moment originals. Throughout are rich stories, vintage recipes, fast facts, and other entertaining asides. Beautiful color photographs and a striking design round out the cookbook approach to this subject, highlighting the difference between an under-the-bar handbook and a stylish, full-blown treatment. The Craft of the Cocktail is that treatment, destined to become the bible of the bar.

Professional Bartender highly recommends
I’m a bartender in Key West, Florida. Unlike many bartenders I know, bartending is NOT something I am doing until I figure out what I want to do with my life…bartending is my chosen career.
And when I grow up, I want to be Dale Degroff.
I have carried this book into work every night for the past 6 1/2 years. Its tattered, stained and the binder is falling apart, yet I would not part with it if someone tried to give me a $200 tip.
I had the pleasure of meeting Dale at the 2008 Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans, and I was pleased, yet not too surprised to see that he was extremely down to earth and genuinely interested to talk about drinks and the craft, even though he’s undoubtedly faced with the same questions on a daily basis. His wife was equally charming and kind.
I have 25 or so bar books. This is the one I use on a daily basis.
I’ve had Chef Mario Batali sit across the bar from me, as well as scores of famous actors and musicians. And I never worry about the quality of my libations, because I have the passion for the craft, and more importantly, I have Dale Degroff next to the well. Hopefully one of these days I’ll successfully convince my work to send me to one of his training seminars. (Was that a pig I just spotted flying over Key West

An Excellent Guide
I bought this book here after seeing it reviewed on Williams-Sonoma’s website. It really is an excellent guide to mixology. I foudn the guides to different liqours at the beginning of the book very interesting – I now know the difference between Bourbon, scotch, and whiskey, what a sour mash is, and the difference between “gin” and “London Dry gin”. This is probably the only cocktail reference one needs to have on hand. Great book.
Best of the Best!
If you are a bartender looking for more knowledge to better yourself at your craft..then this is the book for you. I’ve even started doing training from this book for my new guys…Mr. DeGroff is the best! I can’t wait to go to his B.A.R. classes. Anyone interested in making the most delicious drinks whether it be at the bar or at your house…you need this book!
Outstanding book from the master of mixology
Dale’s writing is reliable as his bartending, and just as entertaining. For novices, an introduction to the difference between making a drink and mixing a cocktail. For the professional, a few tricks they’ve never seen before (unless they were hanging out at the Rainbow Room). Highly recommend this one–and makes a great gift too.
Great book - recipie section difficult to use
This is a great book. The author has good stories and the presentation makes the whole thing very readable and enjoyable. This is also the downfall. The recipes read nicely, and if you can memorize them all by reading through once then you are all set, but the organization within individual recipes should be more structured, in my opinion. There is a description, list of ingredients and sometimes an anecdote with a recipe, but never in any particular order or with any kind of structure other than the ingredients being a bulleted list. I want to be able to open to a recipe and see exactly what to do first so while all the extra information is great, I wish it was structured so that I knew exactly where to look without having to read through a few paragraphs about each recipe.

Plain and simple, this book is a must have for any Barista or any one that enjoys a drink.
The Mixologist's Bible
A comprehensive book containing the history, tools and techniques for making every kind of classic and new cocktail imaginable. Dale’s book is written in an engaging style and represents a purists approach to his passion for his ‘craft’ with no comnpromise made to achieve the perfect cocktail Unlike a lot of ‘cooking books’ anyone who reads the book, especially the section on “Tools, Techniques and Garnishes” can recreate the cocktails for a lifetime of enjoyment.
Much More Than a Cocktail Recipe Book
I found this book to be much more than a great collection of elegant cocktail recipes. De Groff entertains the reader with a history of the cocktail from its early beginnings and the role of bars and barmen in American culture. There’s a very useful how-to section for setting up a home bar, an interesting guide to the huge variety of spirits, anecdotes about the drinking habits of the famous, and items of “trivia” that even include a cure for hiccups. The photographs that accompany the text are exquisite.
For the Cocktail Gourmet
If you are into the art of coctails, and want a book that uses no premade mixers, this is the book for you. This book is very informative. Way more than a recipe book, as I read I aspired to be a gourmet bartender. This book makes mixing drinks an art.
